The University offers both licensure and non-licensure undergraduate programs in early childhood, elementary, and special education. Students can also earn graduate degrees in special education and curriculum and instruction. All courses are offered 100% online and incorporate a Christ-centered worldview—a cornerstone of the University for more than a century. The flexible format makes it possible for you to take one class at time and still have time for work, family, and life's adventures. The University also offers generous transfer credit options and opportunities to earn credit for prior life experiences. CCU’s early childhood education programs will prepare you to make a meaningful impact on the next generation of learners. As a teacher candidate, you’ll study education theory and get field-based learning experiences that put you in the classroom. This unique combination of theory and practice will help you develop the skills to become an effective early childhood teacher. Taught from a Christian worldview, CCU’s early childhood education courses have a flexible, fully online format. In each course, you’ll serve students through servant-leadership in schools and school systems. Small class sizes encourage individualized learning, networking and direct access to instructors who are also professionals in the field. With your B.A. and licensure in early childhood education, you can teach pre-kindergarten through third grade in public, international, private and public charter schools. Once you complete this education program and meet state requirements (including testing and background checks), you can apply to the Colorado Department of Education for a Colorado teaching license. Adult students from around the world can participate in CCU’s online program. Out-of-state? You can use your Colorado license to apply for licensure in your home state, through your department of education’s teacher license transfer process.

Program Semesters/Steps Overview

CCU’s professional core (aka junior and senior year) includes four semesters of coursework, which you can complete in as little as 16 months.

You’ll take content and methods courses, and you’ll get 60 hours of field-based experience.

You’ll get content and methods instruction, and you’ll complete 70 hours of field-based experience.

In your second-to-last term, you’ll take only content and methods courses, without field experience.

In your final semester, you’ll get 640 hours of full-time student teaching, with no additional courses.

Program Hallmarks

CCU will prepare you to teach diverse populations with an embedded/threaded approach. This means that all areas of study will include content about working with diverse students—rather than a standalone course. For example, in your literacy methods course, you’ll explore the research and best practices for literacy instruction with non-native English speakers.

Your field experience will take place in real classrooms in your community. You’ll get support from experienced, licensed mentor teachers and highly trained CCU field coaches (who are also licensed educators). Because the program is online, CCU has technology-enabled field observation protocols, so you can engage with your CCU field coach from anywhere in the world. All you need is an internet connection and a computer.

Designed for the busy adult learner, CCU’s online program presents coursework one class a time; each class is five weeks long. You’ll travel through coursework with your cohort and establish lasting, supportive relationships with classmates from around the world.
