Adams 12 offers 39,000+ students and families the benefits of a large district with a close-knit feel.
I am in my 24th year teaching at Horizon High School in the Adams 12 Five Star School District. Our school, like our district, is highly collaborative, focused on developing strong partnerships among all stakeholders. I appreciate that we have had the freedom to implement school-specific programs, such as SOAR Honors, while being provided strong foundational district support. I have always felt trusted and encouraged to try new approaches, to voice my (many) opinions, and to expand my own leadership capacity.
I believe that learning is the salvation of humankind, and that every teacher has the power to make a significant and positive impact every day. Because learning is collaborative, my main job is to ask, and then to listen. It is collaborative between myself and my students, myself and my coworkers and myself and my amazing spouse, Sonja. It is because of this that I know that my students’ brains—and their hearts—are growing. Learning must be joyful—a celebration of life, of human possibility. I want my classroom to be a testament to the great minds who came before us, and a place where my students aspire to join their company. I believe that teaching any subject is about helping students see truth in a hard day’s work, value in honesty, and validity in asking questions. I want my classroom to build a bridge from the past to the future. Finally, I believe learning is expansive. I celebrate the smallest steps forward, and strive for continuous improvement.
