The Sargent School District's mission is to "inspire students to care more, learn more and experience more in a safe and engaging learning environment." The district is located seven miles north of Monte Vista in a rural area surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. Our district is located in the northern end of the San Luis Valley in a rich agricultural area. The K-12 school is at an elevation of 7,600 feet. Our school district has 60 employees and a total budget appropriation of approximately $5 million. The school enjoys a dry, moderate climate with almost constant blue skies, brilliant sunshine and an abundance of natural and man-made recreational facilities in the surrounding mountains. The campus is 30 miles from Alamosa, home of Adams State University. The patrons of our district are very proud of their school and vitally interested in quality education for our children.
Sargent School District is comprised of three schools—Sargent Elementary (K-6), Sargent Junior High (7-8) and Sargent High School (9-12). Schools are housed in two buildings: The elementary building is a historic building constructed in 1917, then remodeled in 1990 and upgraded again in 2010. The secondary building houses grades 7-12; it was built in 2010, a BEST construction project.
Junior high classes are located on the first floor, with secondary classrooms on the second. The 2019-20 school year is the first year instituting the Leader in Me program. Teachers and students are embracing the opportunities for learning and leadership available through the program. Sargent is known for small class sizes and high academic standards.
Secondary Programs include expanding STEM options (new for 2020-21 will be an aviation program), HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), Business and Spanish, award-winning Science and Agriculture programs and leading-edge technology. Elementary students also benefit from our district’s technology program along with academic-based field trips, including reading achievement. Art and technology classes, swim lessons and ski days are also provided. Professional development is provided through the Leader in Me Program and is also available during the school year on an individualized basis.
The district is on a four-day (Monday-Thursday) schedule.
The initial step on Sargent's teacher salary schedule is $30,500. Maximum at step 30 is $54,350. The district pays $493 per month toward health insurance coverage through BEST Health Plan. Insurance benefits also include life and AD&D coverage.
Sargent High School has an Early Childhood Program through our partnership with Sargent Early Learning Center (located on-campus), which provides students hands-on experience with early childhood education.
