About

The Colorado School of Mines (Mines) is a public university located in Golden, Colorado. For 150 years, our STEM-focused education and research produces the talent, knowledge, and solutions to serve industry and benefit society — all to create a more prosperous future. We're a community of entrepreneurial leaders and resilient problem-solvers who revel in challenges and work together in order to engineer change on Earth and beyond. With its top-ranked academic programs, close industry connections, and a global alumni network, Mines is the go-to place for distinction and expertise in both established and emerging engineering and scientific fields.

Our approximately 7,000 students represent all 50 U.S. states and over 88 countries. Mines' student athletes compete in NCAA Division II as part of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 9 men's and 7 women's sports. Teach@Mines is the only teacher preparation program in Colorado focused exclusively on training STEM teachers. The teaching licenses we offer are science, mathematics, and the first computer science licensure program in the State of Colorado. There are three pathways we offer to licensure — a minor, a BS in Design Engineering with a STEM Teaching Focus Area, and a MS in STEM Education. Additionally, we also offer a combined BS/MS program with students graduating in five years.

Program Info

A Colorado School of Mines Bachelor of Science in Design Engineering with a focus in STEM Education is more than an engineering degree. This degree provides hands-on experiences from the start, including working on real-world challenges in interdisciplinary teams and mastering all phases of problem definition, concept generation, and solution implementation that relates to teaching. Earning a Design Engineering degree at Mines means you develop deep expertise in integrative design, which enables you to bridge traditional problem-solving approaches to engineering, creative design, and social sciences in the classroom. Alternatively, you can choose a different Mines major and pursue a teaching minor which also leads to teacher licensure.

The Teach@Mines flexible programs combine all the strengths of Mines’ technical degrees with courses in science education, culminating in a two-semester, client-sponsored Capstone design project which allows you to chart your own path and pursue projects and coursework that support your passion! The courses required to gain teacher licensure on both the STEM education major and minor paths are designed to be completed in two years. You will be technically skilled, experienced with innovating and problem-solving, able to collaborate across diverse disciplines, and ready to lead and innovate in any organizational setting. In addition to traditional engineering or design careers in technology and industry, BS in DE graduates are uniquely suited to contribute technical design expertise to classrooms in America or around the world making them ideal candidates for STEM Teaching positions. Your opportunities are endless!
